4. Check the remaining months, days, hours, minutes and seconds.
5. The countdown will automatically update every second.
6. Click Reset whenever you want to enter a different date of birth.

Birthday Countdown Worked Examples

These examples use the stated current date and time in UTC; the live tool uses your device’s local time. For a birth date of December 25, 2000, at 00:00 on December 20, 2026 the next birthday is Friday, December 25, 2026, with an upcoming age of 26 and a countdown of 0 months, 5 days, 0 hours, 0 minutes and 0 seconds. At noon that day, 4 days and 12 hours remain.

At 00:00 on November 25, 2026, the December 25 birthday is 1 complete calendar month away: the tiles show 1 month and 0 days, although the calendar gap is 30 days. Days is the remainder after complete months, not a total-day counter. Use Days Between Dates with Standard difference for the total calendar-day gap.

At 00:00 on December 26, 2026, the December 25 birthday has passed. The target becomes Saturday, December 25, 2027, the upcoming age is 27 and the countdown is 11 months and 29 days. There is no need to change the birth year when the calendar year changes.

How Does the Birthday Countdown Work?

The birth month and day determine the next birthday. The birth year determines the age you will reach; it does not make the tool count down to the original date of birth.

If the birthday date has passed, the tool targets the following year’s birthday. If the birthday is today, it shows Today, a birthday message and zero in every countdown field for that local calendar date.

The tool finds complete calendar months first, adjusting a month anniversary to the last valid day when needed. It splits the remaining time into 24-hour days, hours, minutes and seconds. Since month lengths differ, treating every month as 30 days will not reproduce all results.

The target is 00:00:00 at the start of the birthday in your device’s local time zone. Birth time is not entered, so the countdown reaches zero at the start of the birthday rather than at the hour you were born.

February 29 Birthday Examples

For February 29 births, the tool uses February 28 in non-leap years and February 29 in leap years. Use February 29, 2000 as the birth date for these examples.

Non-Leap and Leap-Year Results

At 00:00 UTC on February 27, 2027, the target is Sunday, February 28, 2027, with 1 day remaining and an upcoming age of 27. On February 28, it shows Today and zero countdown values.

At 00:00 UTC on February 28, 2028, the target is Tuesday, February 29, 2028, with 1 day remaining and an upcoming age of 28. On February 29, it shows Today. At 00:00 UTC on March 1, 2027, the next target is February 29, 2028, with 11 months and 28 days remaining.

Time Zone and Countdown Limitations

The live result depends on your device clock and local time zone; there is no time-zone selector. Around daylight-saving changes, the hours left can differ from a simple calendar-day count. In New York at 00:00 on March 8, 2026, a March 9 birthday is 23 hours away because the clock moves forward during that interval.

The birth date must be a valid Gregorian date that is not in the future. Years 0001 to 0099 are not supported in this version. There is no March 1 option for February 29 birthdays. The February 28 convention does not choose a celebration date or establish an official eligibility rule.

Background tabs can pause or delay timer updates. Run Start Countdown again after changing the device clock or time zone, or when returning to a tab left open across midnight. Today stops the timer, so restart it to begin the next year’s countdown after that birthday date ends.
