How Is the Day of the Week Calculated?
The tool treats the entered date as a Gregorian calendar date and reads its weekday using a UTC date value. It also calculates the day of the year and ISO week number. UTC keeps date arithmetic consistent; you do not need to convert the selected calendar date to another time zone.
The result shows whether the selected date falls on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday.
The Day of the Year result represents the selected date’s position within the year. January 1 is day 1, while December 31 is day 365 in a normal year or day 366 in a leap year.
The Week of the Year result follows the ISO week-date system. In this system, weeks begin on Monday and the first week is the week containing the year’s first Thursday.
A Gregorian year is a leap year if divisible by 4, except a century year must also be divisible by 400. Thus 1900 is not a leap year and 2000 is a leap year.
Weekday and ISO Week Examples
February 29, 2024 is Thursday. Day of the Month is 29, Day of the Year is 60, Week of the Year is 9 and Leap Year is Yes. January’s 31 days plus February’s 29 explain day 60.
January 1, 2021 is Friday and day 1 of the calendar year, but ISO week 53. That week belongs to ISO week-year 2020; an ISO week can cross a calendar-year boundary. The tool displays the week number, not a separate ISO week-year field.
March 1, 1900 is Thursday, day 60, with Leap Year No. February 29, 2000 is Tuesday, day 60, with Leap Year Yes. These examples show why divisibility by 4 is not the whole leap-year rule.
Historical Dates and Other Limits
This version supports years 0100 to 9999. It applies Gregorian rules even before that calendar was introduced and does not reproduce a country’s historical switch from the Julian calendar.
ISO week numbers can differ from calendars that start weeks on Sunday or call the week containing January 1 week 1. Use Today follows your device’s local calendar date. This tool does not convert event timestamps between time zones.
